The Bestest thing in life…

What is the best thing in life?

To be alive. To be handsome. To breathe. To be rich. To see others happy. To be sexy. To be on TV. To have a sharp nose. To be born with siblings and inherit all the good genes. To be in the range of standard and acceptable BMI. To see one’s enemy fail. To bribe a policeman and get away with drive-while-phoneing. To receive.

TO RECEIVE.

While all (or most) of the above would be deemed acceptable by general standards, many would collectively agree that to receive is the best thing in life. And to an extent, i agree. I mean, why wouldn’t i? Most of the time when one receives – a gift, a promotion, or even a pleasant surprise, one will feel happy and appreciated. In some cases, one even feels special for receiving for the giver.

Well, i had just recently received my share of pleasant surprises – unexpectedly, from a  close friend. And while the feeling of being gratified is still taking time to sink in, i am always grateful for the gift and pleasantries. It felt like my birthday came early this year! :p THANK YOU very much, for the thoughtfulness.

However, i feel the best thing in life is actually to give.

Yeap, you read right. The best thing in life is GIVING*. To give time, energy, money, effort, attention; a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a phrase of encouragement, a smile, a helping hand in need, a timely advice, a thank you note for help rendered, a bouquet of flowers for a lovely lady, and many more ways of giving to a person for a better cause or a cause to better a person.

To give to a person for a better cause or a cause to better a person?

Yes.

Each year, I’m thrilled to give my time and energy at the 30 hour Famine DIY Camp at HELP UNI. This year is my seventh time. ^^

For the unknown, the 30 hour Famine movement  are an initiative by World Vision a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. World Vision serves all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender.

The Official Famine Weekend is 19-20 July 2014, so surf on to famine.worldvision.com.my for more info and even sign up as a camper!Every year i see many teens, university students and young adults at HELP’s camp. Each doing their part to raise funds for the poor and participating in the camps various activities – not to mention fasting for a whopping mere 30 hours! : ) With this year’s theme “Kick Out Hunger”, i look forward to a smashing good time at the camp!

By doing my little part in this huge movement, i somehow feel that giving may not be the bestest thing in life. :s

What then, is the bestest thing in life, you might be wondering? : )

I feel, the bestest thing in life… is giving without any expectation of return, and/or to someone who you know, can never repay you.

Try it, and you’ll be glad you did. : )

*In this post, i write only in the light of positive things, i DO NOT advocate the act of giving to illegal and irresponsible causes, ie. give money to buy drugs and other ill intended purposes. My writing is based on my opinion and is to be taken with a pinch of salt and not necessarily in the literal sense.

Inspiring Obsession

My newest inspiring obsession!

Emeli Sande – one helluva vocalist. Check out her youtube channel. I recently stumbled upon this beautiful artiste thanks to Spotify – home to some pretty awesome music.

An awesome performance with the song – Read All About It Pt. III

You’ve got the words to change a nation
But you’re biting your tongue
You’ve spent a life time stuck in silence
Afraid you’ll say something wrong
If no one ever hears it how we gonna learn your song?So come on, come on
Come on, come on

You’ve got a heart as loud as lions
So why let your voice be tamed?
Maybe we’re a little different
There’s no need to be ashamed
You’ve got the light to fight the shadows
So stop hiding it away

Come on, come on

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream ’til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I’m not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh

At night we’re waking up the neighbours
While we sing away the blues
Making sure that we’re remembered, yeah
Cause we all matter too
If the truth has been forbidden
Then we’re breaking all the rules

So come on, come on
Come on, come on,

Let’s get the TV and the radio
To play our tune again
It’s ’bout time we got some airplay of our version of events
There’s no need to be afraid
I will sing with you my friend

Come on, come on

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream ’til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I’m not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh

Yeah, we’re all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?
Now we’re finally finding our voices
So take a chance, come help me sing this
Yeah, we’re all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?
And now we’re finally finding our voices
Just take a chance, come help me sing this

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream ’til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I’m not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream ’til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I’m not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh

PinkDot 2014

For Family. For Friends. For Love.

Pink Dot 2013

Last year while i was in Singapore, i got to be a small part of PinkDot 2013 with a lovely friend of mine. She’s such a gem to tag along with me. PinkDot is an event where the LGBT community and their friends and families gather together to celebrate the freedom to love. While i wont’t be part of PinkDot 2014, what i experienced last year was an eye opener. I was moved to see so many people (close to 20000 strong) LGBT and straight people come together from all over the region to celebrate gender equality, bonds of friendship, and a universal freedom to love and be loved.

Kudos to pinkdot.sg for this year’s PinkDot video:

Last year I was touched to see the families of LGBTs showing up in full force to support their gay family members with unbiassed love and understanding. So i means a lot to me to be able to share my thoughts on this meaningful event. Because being amidst such an amazing crowd, one can’t help to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance.

If you have never been to the PinkDot, you should – for it is a place where any one can come together and feel safe, without fear of prejudice and truly understand that within each individual, lies a basic need: to love and be loved – freely.

When we set aside our outer differences, we are left with being just human beings.

For Family. For Friends. For Love.

The Serenity Prayer.

In the past few days, i was fortunate to have found a long lost friend, through youtube. I’ve been an avid follower of his blog until he stopped blogging some years ago. Upon getting in touch with him, i learnt that he has been through some tough times and is getting back onto his feet. He’s a special guy. and So is is boyfriend. And after learning of their story and their life’s struggles, i was compelled to reflect on the human paradox of the two things in life which are in and out of our control.

Like they say, “Shit Happens.” And indeed they do.

But we cant control what sort of shits that were to befall us.

NO.

What we can do, is control how we respond to what happened, regardless to what it is.

Each of us would have our own remedy for the shits that life throw at us; here’s mine, and it’s called The Serenity Prayer. : )

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;

Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Be in control.
